Stopping Plastic Bag Use At Home
Some Australians re-use their plastic bags as bin liners. The most common question asked of me by these people is “what will I use to put my rubbish in? How will I line my bin?”
The simple answer is you don’t need to. Back in the 1960’s before plastic bags were introduced, when you had leftover food, you either recycled it into ‘Bubble and Squeak’ type recipes or you put it out on the compost.
The other alternative was to place 3 sheets of newspaper on to the kitchen bench top and then place the leftover food or food scraps into the centre of the newspaper. Then you simply wrapped it up like fish and chips and threw it into the bin. Done properly, there were no leaks which could smell up your bin.
If there was a leak, people used leftover washing water to rinse out their bin. Or after the garbo had picked up the old rubbish, they would open the lid of the empty bin and let the rain soak the inside of the bin.
These days, any leaks usually come from liquid heavy food such as that purchased at Asia food outlets. Where you have leftover food of this type, put it into the original takeaway container and then wrap that container in old newspaper.
