5 years ago, Jon Dee and I persuaded all of the retailers in Coles Bay to ban plastic check-out bags. We replaced the plastic bags with reusable bags and strong Australian-made paper bags.
Over the past 5 years, our small town has stopped 1.75 million plastic bags from being used and ending up in our landfills and environment.
People in Coles Bay have got used to being plastic bag free at the check-out and are proud of the difference that they have made. Indeed, many other towns and communities here and overseas have followed our example, making our small Tasmanian town a role model for positive environmental change.
It’s time for all Australians to do a ‘Coles Bay’ and go totally plastic bag free. I strongly encourage you to get ready for the phase-out of plastic bags. This web site will show you how.
