Retail Case Studies and Role Models

Over the past five years, many retailers have achieved spectacular reductions in their usage of plastic check-out bags. On this page you’ll be able to check-out our growing list of retail case studies and role models.

These will show you the many innovative ways that retailers have managed to reduce their usage of plastic check-out bags – in some cases to zero. Whatever you do, don’t reinvent the wheel. Many other retailers have done the ground work on this, so use our web site to learn from them.

McDonald’s

For over 30 years, McDonald’s has led the way in Australia by using paper takeaway bags in their restaurants. The company walks the talk environmentally by handing out around 160 million paper bags every year.

“A business leader must also be an environmental leader,” said Director of Supply Chain for McDonald’s Australia, Jackie McArthur. “As part of the plastic bag phase-out, we would encourage the quickservice industry as a whole to consider the move to paper takeaway bags.”

The Body Shop:

One of The Body Shop’s core values is to Protect our Planet. This includes protecting wildlife, especially endangered species and eco-systems. That’s why we’re proud to have been Plastic Bag Free in all our stores since 1999.

We give our customers bags that use 50% recycled paper (which includes up to 50% post-consumer waste), elemental chlorine free pulps, environmentally friendly inks and water based adhesives. We also ask each customer if they need a bag (many don’t) and encourage them to re-use the bag. We can all do something to reduce our environmental impact –to preserve our planet for future generations.

We strongly encourage other retailers to take steps to eradicate the use of plastic bags.
